As one of the foremost advocates of green campus in the region, sustainability is at the heart of the wide range of activities that the HSMC Community undertakes.  To deepen the understanding on the campus sustainable development, students and staff are cordially invited to attend the talk on “Sustainable Campus – Innovation Green Building” to be given by Mr Steve Ng, Assistant Facility Manager, HSMC Campus Development and Management Office, as the first initiative of the Working Group on Energy Conservation and Sustainability recently formed.  The details of the talk are as follows:

About the Talk

A green building with sky garden is the outcome of a sustainable design that focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource consumption such as water, energy and materials, while reducing impacts on the environment.

Tree, bamboo, shrub and lawn sequester up to 12 tons of CO2 gases per hectare and release over 35% oxygen to the atmosphere, but they also need, in general, 500mm irrigation water for supporting their rapid growth rates. Besides, setting up sky garden on a bare roof is a passive cooling technique preventing incoming solar radiation from reaching the building structure below; however, the overall installation and maintenance costs of the recycling and irrigation system can be more than several million dollars. There are some researches focusing on the understanding of plant biology and their benefits to the environment by minimizing CO2 gases. Associated green facilities have to be considered including rainwater recycling system, irrigation and drainage system, which are more related to achieve the energy conservation and sustainability, so how does these renewable plantation practice and advanced building facilities benefit to our college in such aspects?

About the Speaker

Mr Steve Ng is Assistant Facility Manager of Campus Development & Management Office of the College. He received tertiary education and technical training in BSc in Architectural Studies, BSc in Geo-Engineering, ISA Certificate of Arboriculture, Certificate in Pest Control & Core Safety and PgD in System Analysis & Design. With the academic background, he has working experience in construction projects of Water Supplies Department and landscape management of Diocesan Boys’ School. He was awarded fellowship and professional membership by Geotechnical Society of London, Geological Society of America, International Society of Arboriculture, Project Management Institute, etc.
